Christmas Light
By Mariel Davenport

"The Word became flesh and made
His dwelling among us. We have seen
His glory, the glory of the One and Only,
who came from the Father, full of grace
and truth."
John 1:14
n the beginning, God opened His Holy mouth and spoke, "Light." And in an instant a dark, chaotic existence was penetrated with unfiltered, living Light. This perfect Light set the stage for all of Creation, as the warm breath of Elohim the Triune Creator, spoke life and order where there had been darkness and chaos. As is common in ancient Hebrew thought, the spoken word is the self-expression of a person; how much more so for the One and Only divine Person?
This Perfect Light tugged continually at the hearts of those called by His name. He was the pillar of fire, the burning bush and the light for their path. But the ultimate ray of His light was cast upon the womb of a young virgin with a willing heart.
"I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said." (Luke 1:38) Words of life and hope now hung in the air of a world clouded in sin. For nine months the Perfect Light cloaked itself within this growing womb. Then in the fullness of time, all the years of divine silence and lost souls were pierced with the cry of a newborn, still wet from birth. The Light of Life once again penetrated the darkness with warm breath, this time in an unrecognizable fashion.
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)
The Living Word of Light offered for all men now lay wrapped in the arms of a young bride to be. The darkness of the night around her was nothing compared to the darkness of the unbelieving souls with stone cold hearts too full of religion to know this relationship. In this pink, warm Child was Life like none had ever known. That Life was the very Light of men. He extends that Life and Light still today to those willing to receive. To His great glory He once again speaks Living Light into the darkness of those who come. "The Light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." (John 1:4-5)
This Christmas, may our own lips declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful Light (1 Peter 19b). May your Christmas be bright.
